"China and the West" - an Analysis of Foreign Approaches to China.
The paper starts in referring to Lord McCartney's mission to China of 1793, to extreme differences of outlook between the British and the Chinese, as Britain tried to create a formal trade relationship. Protocol was important, with long debate on whether or not the emissary should kowtow and in the end, McCartney was told not to kowtow, for Great Britain should be seen as at least the equal of China. This paper is written in a readable way, but holds a good deal, whether or not the reader is interested in Chinese history, or contemporary China and the relationship with the West.
