This paper examines the construction of the transcontinental railway in Canada. The construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway was a fundamental aspect of the National Policy (1878). As such it played a key role in integrating the west into the new Dominion, in preventing the development of north-south links with the United States and facilitated the economic development of the region. 15 pgs.
