Hostage Negotiations Units are made up of officers carefully selected and trained to respond to incidents involving barricaded or suicidal individuals, or situations where hostages are being held. Acting in coordination with the other teams, negotiators may utilize unique equipment and tactics in their efforts to peacefully resolve volatile, potentially dangerous incidents. The focus of this paper will be the emphasize on negotiation techniques to overcome hostage problems in the even of the hijacking of a plane with reference to the recent hijacking of the Indian Airlines IA 814. Through a careful case study, which utilizes previous data, a statement of the success and/or failure will be devised and provided with recommendations for improvement. The Verbal Interactional Analysis Technique will be used to analyze the discrepancies in the case chosen. 70 pgs. Bibliography lists 63 sources.
