This paper discusses the unintended consequences of social policy in terms of the problems facing the middle class as it slides more into poverty while the affleunt minority gets more affluent, a process taking place at least since the 1980s, as described by Barbara Ehrenreich and Katherine S. Newman and addressed by other analysts of society as well.
