Groovy Fashions

Beginning in the 1960s, with help from Hollywood, men’s fashion has provided the most powerful means of delineating modern people socially and culturally. The clothing worn for both casual and office attire dictate political and social “sides,” particularly for men. Unfortunately, ever since, this is often relegated to slacks and a shirt, sometimes with a jacket thrown in. The only truly fascinating fashion decades for men took place in the 1960s and 1980s, where men were allowed some flexibility in expression. Even preppies could make a statement outside of grandpa’s suit and tie. Fortunately, the alternative culture continues to provide some eye candy. One of these originated with the Teddy Boy, the 1950s street “rowdy” fashions continue to evolve according to underground social and cultural trends. It is only thanks to the “good” fashion decades for men and cinema that this appealing style survives. The reason the Teddy Boy exists also harks back to the youth culture uprising of the 1960s. In that revolution, men made the fashion statements and determined the look. Though subdued in subsequent decades with Levi and t-shirt trends of the 1970s and Gap spin off trends still alive today, the underground Teddy Boy continues to offer hope for flexibility in men’s fashion.
